About Me
Expressing the universal experience of grief & acceptance.
My current broken heart series reflects the grief that we all experience over the course of our lives. When our hearts break, they are forced to expand - leaving empty voids. It is possible to grow beautifully within these gaps as the scar tissues heal and become a permanent part of us. This work is inspired by the profound grief of several personal experiences including losing my dad as I went through the dying process with him to the last breath. That pain was palpable for many years, but I have ultimately come to embrace and accept grief as a permanent part of myself. It provides wisdom and even laughter & joy at times.
Grief is not something that can be negotiated with the mind. It must be felt - and the only way out is through. Often, I think of the Dalai Lama quote: "Too much energy in your country is spent developing the mind instead of the heart." My aim for this series is to reflect the universal emotions of grief rather than trying to rationalize the process
From a technical perspective, I enjoy having a focused concept that allows me to experiment with color combinations and a variety of materials.
I permanently reside in Reno, NV but have lived between Northern California & Northern Nevada all of my life (Battle Born!) When in wine country, I worked in tasting rooms while earning B.A. degrees in both Art History and Painting from Sonoma State University. In 2017, as a response to the massive wild fires in Sonoma and Napa Counties, I created the Firestorm Mosaic project and worked exclusively on that series for one year. In turn, that experience also inspired me to create the broken heart series.
